The content of this booklet was originally published in Norwegian as "Similengjar: Gards- og Ætte-Soga frå eldste tider til 1865," an article in the Tidsskrift for Valdres Historlielag [Magazine of the Valdres
History Society], Volume 7, 1925.
Countless Canadians and Americans with roots in the Valdres region of Norway can
claim a blood relationship, however distant, to the once prominent Semeleng family.
Through the Semelengs they can trace their ancestry back to royalty and nobility in the
viking era. The family takes its name from the Semeleng farm, located near the south-east
end of Slidre Fjord, across from Røn in Vestre Slidre parish. The farm name has
taken various forms over the centuries, depending upon pronunciation and the phonetic spelling
that became so popular during the Norwegian national awakening of the 19th century.
The name has also been written Semelenge, Semle, Simling, Similinge, Simmilengji, Summelengji, etc.
Some other farm and surnames mentioned in the booklet: Berge, Dalbø, Dall, Dokken, Egge, Einang, Ellestad, Enes, Fauske, Garvik, Hande, Haugrud, Holden, Hovi, Kvåle, Losna, Løten, Mo, Moe, Moshagen, Ormestad, Rye, Røvang, Seigen, Stee, Sundheim, Tuff, Tysse, Vika, Vikhagen, Viste, Øde, Øygard.
